When I just take yarn in my hands, I am already in love with the thing I am going to create. There is no other way! It is absolutely impossible to do the same thing for many hours if you are not obsessed with it. Sometimes I knit for a particular person wishing him or her love, luck and health. It is my little magic. I would like my creation to warm not only body but soul too. It turns out that this kind of attitude is popular among nations.
On the west coast of Ireland, where Atlantic rages, this surprisingly beautiful and sophisticated knitting technique has appeared. Aran knitting stands out by its rich patterns in which the secret meaning is hidden. Every tracery has its own intention and does not appear on the sweater randomly. Patterns contain special messages: wishing godspeed and good haul of fish, warding from harm or reminding of home. Aran sweaters were mostly made from artless and crude wool of milky beige colour. Every family had its own unique pattern. It should have saved namely that seaman for whom the sweater was made. In case of misfortune, the pattern should have helped relatives to identify the body of the fisherman, whose life was taken by the ocean.
However, there is another version of this story.. It is modern and much more pragmatic. It says that the legend is nothing but a fiction, a hoax and ‘special sweaters’ is just one more way to make money on confiding tourists. But I want to believe in great love, storing from troubles.
